Big Things Are Happening This Summer!

Access to E-Resources

We will be working to implement a new discovery and authentication system this summer. Through an RFP process, EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) was selected to provide Pennsylvanians with access to selected e-resources available in POWER Library, which will enhance how users can access, search, choose, and use POWER Library resources.

The current e-resource access (authentication) system will be available through June 2024. No immediate action will be required by the time students return to school in the fall. However, please keep an eye on the Access Pennsylvania News for information about opportunities with the new discovery platform.

E-Resources Available in POWER Library

The current 5-year contract with GALE as a provider of e-resources in POWER Library is coming to its conclusion. Time flies! On behalf of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Office of Commonwealth Libraries, Hosting Solutions and Library Consulting (HSLC) issued a Request for Proposals for electronic resource subscriptions to be included in POWER Library, effective July 2023.

This procurement process will result in some changes to the currently available e-resources in POWER Library.  Proposals are currently in the evaluation stage, therefore it is not yet possible to say what changes will occur to the e-resources in POWER Library. 

 

Please note that this RFP only affects GALE e-resources. Therefore the following e-resources will continue to be available in the fall:

  • Contemporary Authors (Content owned by the State of PA.)
  • EBSCO - Academic Search Main Edition
  • EBSCO - AP Newsroom
  • EBSCO - Auto Repair Source
  • EBSCO - EBSCO E-Books (E-books available in perpetuity.)
  • EBSCO - GreenFILE
  • EBSCO - LISTA
  • EBSCO - Science Reference Center/E-Book Collection
  • EBSCO - Small Engine Repair Reference Center
  • EBSCO - Teacher Reference Center
  • GALE - GALE E-Books (E-books available in perpetuity.)
  • ProQuest - ProQuest E-Book Central (E-books available in perpetuity.)
  • Scholastic - BookFLIX
  • Scholastic - TrueFLIX

Additionally, please note that as previously communicated, CyberSmarts will be discontinued on June 30, 2023. 

 

The results of the RFP process will be announced as soon as all contracts are finalized.

Act 48 Now Available for POWER Academy

POWER Academy now supports Act 48 and Continuing Education (CE) credits! Credits are earned in 15-minute increments through POWER Academy; the number earned will depend on the length of the tutorial. Simply find, view a tutorial, and complete a short quiz based on what you’ve learned.

Fall Training - Mark Your Calendar!

POWER Library training will occur in October. Training will be in-person only. Locations for fall training are based on a number of criteria including the availability of training locations, costs of the locations, access to free parking, HSLC staff efficiency related to travel, etc.
