Â
Libraries that participate in the Access Pennsylvania ILL Cooperative have probably noticed some changes lately in the shipping addresses of the libraries with whom they are lending and borrowing.
Â
Multiple public library districts across the state have shifted to “hub shipping” for interlibrary loans.
Â
Much like the model popularized by Fred Smith with FedEx, with these districts all of the ILL packages are shipped in and out of one location, typically the district center library, rather than each physical library location. Â We have used functionality in the SHAREit software to support this initiative.
Â
The districts currently participating in the initiative are Allentown, Altoona, Chester, Delaware, Easton, Montgomery, New Castle, Northeast, Reading, and Wilkes-Barre. Somerset County Library System (Johnstown district) is also participating.
Â
What does this mean in terms of participating libraries and their workflows? For most of you, not much.
Â
Two things may look different for you, but things will function pretty much the same way they have been.
Â
The first difference you may notice is that, in many instances but not all, the name of the library has been altered to reflect their district or system.
Â
So, for example, Haverford Township Free Library now appears in SHAREit as Delaware County Libraries – Haverford.
Â
The second difference you may notice is that the address that prints out on the shipping label now reflects the shipping hub’s address, not the library’s physical location.
Â
This is what that looks like now on the shipping labels:
