The Office of Commonwealth Libraries has added the following resources to POWER Library effective immediately!
But wait, there's more! These e-resources have been purchased for perpetual access.

National Geographic Magazine Archive 1888-2020
This iconic monthly publication provides unparalleled, in-depth coverage of society, cultures, nature, science, technology, travel, geography, and more -- making it an essential resource for educators and students as well as general readers.
 
This resource includes complete, unlimited access to the magazine's main content through 2020 -- every article from every issue, each fully searchable through an intuitive interface.
 
Included are vivid photographs and historic articles as well as engaging videos and detailed maps. Explore the most recognized name in exploration and discovery, with comprehensive, relevant articles, legendary photographs, maps, and map supplements, the iconic magazine documents life on our planet and beyond, interpreting the world through the lens of personal story and experience.
Time Magazine Archive 1923-2000
This archive presents an extensive collection of the prominent weekly news magazine dating back to its first issue in March 1923 through December 2000, presented in a comprehensive cover-to-cover format. The 4,000 issues include reports of national and international current events, politics, sports, and entertainment.
 
Capturing the relevant news for a given week, the magazine remains an important resource for researchers studying just about any aspect of 20th-century history and life. The archive is valuable to researchers and students of 20th-century current events, politics, and culture, as well as those interested in the history of business, advertising, sports, and more.
The following are Primary Source collections from GALE.
Introduction to U.S. History: The American Revolution (GALE) 
Consisting of 450 titles totaling 94,000 pages of text, Introduction to U.S. History: The American Revolution documents the revolution and war that created the United States of America, from the earliest protests in 1765 through the peace treaty of 1783. The collection examines the political, social, and intellectual upheaval of the age, as well as the actual war for American independence through its eight long years of conflict.
Introduction to U.S. History: The Civil War (GALE) 
Consisting of nearly 500 titles totaling about 90,000 pages of text, Introduction to U.S. History: The Civil War documents the war that transformed America, ending slavery, and unifying the nation around the principles of freedom. This collection examines the war in all its complexity; its battles and campaigns, its political and religious aspects, the experiences of its leaders and common soldiers, the home front, and the military campground, from its causes to its consequences. 
Introduction to U.S. History: Slavery in America (GALE) 
This collection includes over 600 documents with over 75,000 pages covering key aspects of the history of slavery in America from its origins in Africa to its abolition, including materials on the slave trade, plantation life, emancipation, pro-slavery and anti-slavery arguments, the religious views on slavery, etc.

 KidSpeak Languages Now Available on POWER Kids

6 KidSpeak languages available in Transparent Language have been added to POWER Kids. The KidSpeak languages available are:
  • Chinese, Mandarin - Simplified 
  • English 
  • French 
  • German 
  • Italian 
  • Spanish, Castillian
KidSpeak languages help kids learn phrases suitable for learners’ age, needs, and interests. More than 40 activities, puzzles, and songs guide young learners through the basics, along with a cartoon “friend” who speaks the language.
Important Note - The landing page for the KidSpeak languages will present a login screen to users. This is correct. In order to track progress it is necessary for users to have an account. Users who do not want to track progress may select the 'Continue as a guest' option located beneath the login to proceed.

Memorial Day HSLC Office Closure Notice 

HSLC will be closed for business on Monday, May 27, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday to remember all who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
 
HSLC staff will monitor support for any notification of service outages. All other support needs will be responded to upon our return to work on Tuesday, May 28.
 
HSLC wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day.

POWER Library/Access PA Annual Technology Support Fee Notice

The technology support fee will remain the same for 2024-25.

Invoices will be distributed in April of 2024.

What are the cost-savings of participating in POWER Library?
Statewide contracts for POWER Library resources are paid by the Pennsylvania Department of Education/Office of Commonwealth Libraries.  In turn, your school or library benefits by not having to purchase these databases from local funds.

  • It would cost a school $56,515 to subscribe to all of the e-resources in POWER Library on their own. 
  • It would cost a public library $73,366 to subscribe to all of the e-resources in POWER Library on their own.

In addition to cost-savings, participants are provided with enhanced support, training, and custom programming for access to the e-resources.
