Spring Training 2022 Information and Handouts

COVID Acknowledgement
Attendees must maintain social distancing and wear a mask that fully covers the mouth and nose at all times, except when eating or drinking. All registrants will be asked to acknowledge a COVID statement during the registration process. We thank you for understanding and for helping us in our efforts to provide a safe and healthy training  environment. If you are unable to wear a mask for medical reasons, please contact HSLC.

General Schedule
Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 8:15am. The sessions will begin promptly at 9:00 am and end no later than 3:45 pm, with a 45-minute catered lunch break. We will email a reminder and directions to you one week before the scheduled session.

Live Stream Pilot Project
In an effort to offer access to live training as an accommodation for those not able to attend in-person due to the mask requirement, HSLC will convene a pilot project by live streaming two of the sessions at the March 30 training. The sessions to be live streamed will be:

  • Access PA and Interlibrary Loan: Putting it all together with SHAREit (9 AM – 11:45 AM)
  • POWER Library, Resource Accessibility, and the School Library: How POWER Library Can Help Bridge the Gap (1:30 PM – 3:45 PM)

We do not plan to make recordings available for viewing later. We apologize in advance if we are not streaming your preferred sessions, but this is our first attempt to live stream. We will evaluate the experience for all parties, and determine if it is feasible for future opportunities.

Act 48 and Continuing Education Information
Attendees may be eligible to receive Act 48 credit hours or CE credits for attending a session. Act 48 credit request forms and CE certificates will be handed out at the end of each training session that is Act 48/CE eligible.

Handouts
Due to cost, please note that extra handouts will not be printed and made available at the training location. If you desire printed copies, please download the handouts and print them in advance.

Bring a Laptop, iPad, or other Internet Enabled Device
Please bring your own internet-enabled device to the training in order to fully participate. Wi-fi will be available at all locations and power outlets for recharging devices will be available during breaks.

Still unsure as to how to navigate SHAREit? Not sure which parts of the Participant Record are important? Can’t figure out how to place multiple copy requests? Wondering what that little red flag means in the Request Manager? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, this session is for you. Join us as we work our way through the ILL process using the SHAREit software’s functionality, talk about efficient ILL workflows, and make sure you know exactly how to keep up with what’s going on with Access PA and POWER Library in general.

During this session, we will cover:

  1. The framework of the Access Pennsylvania ILL cooperative and how SHAREit fits into the process.
  2. The basic functionality of the SHAREit system
  3. Maximizing your library’s ILL workflow by aligning it with the features of the SHAREit system

Alternative Reference: Using PA Photos & Documents and Chat with a Librarian to Serve Your Library, Patrons, and Students
Join us for a lively discussion about two of the other POWER services and how they can complement your library’s traditional reference and research options. Learn how PA Photos and Docs can add a multi-media dimension to traditional reference, while Chat with a Librarian can help to maximize your reference and information services (and no you don’t have to be a service partner to offer these great resources to your community!).

During this session we will cover:

  1. Two POWER Library services and how they can complement your library’s traditional reference and research options
  2. How PA Photos and Docs can add a multi-media dimension to traditional reference
  3. How Chat with a Librarian can maximize your reference and information services

Building a Digital Branch with POWER Library
The importance of building and supporting a robust digital library branch has shown to be a strategic and integral part of modern library services, especially when faced with the temporary closure of our physical spaces. This session will showcase how to use POWER Library services to reach your patrons and students while building upon the library’s digital branch with offerings such as e-resources, Chat with a Librarian, PA Photos & Docs and more.  We will take a look beyond simply adding links to a website and showcase tips and tricks for creating a dynamic digital library space.

During this session we will cover:

  1. How to use POWER Library services to build or complement the library’s digital branch
  2. Basic troubleshooting tips and tricks for adding and maintaining POWER Library services on the library’s digital branch
  3. How to promote POWER Library to your patrons, community, and stakeholders through social media, digital programing, and more

PA Photos & Documents: All Things Digitization!
Join Nicole Joniec, Digitization Specialist, to discuss anything and everything PA Photos & Documents!  Feel free to bring any questions you may have, including any technical issues, as she’ll have access to some digitization equipment as well as Islandora, the system that PA Photos & Documents utilizes, onsite. This session is recommended for PA Photos & Documents users, collection managers and those who would like to learn more about PA Photos & Documents, both as a user and a content contributor.

Join us for this session and discover some of the more useful, patron-friendly, eResources available to public libraries through POWER Library.  And most importantly, learn about some of the tools and resources available in POWER Library to educate, inform, and instruct your patrons, as well as, tips and tricks to help you remember all that POWER Library has available.

During this session we will cover:

POWER Library, Resource Accessibility, and the School Library: How POWER Library Can Help Bridge the Gap

In this session, we will walk you through some of the many resources in the POWER Library arsenal that can assist you with all of the above. We won’t just tell you about the what – we want to show you the how and the why. Come for some tips and tricks on practical applications of the POWER resources available to your students.

During the session we will cover:

  1. What POWER Library actually is and how POWER Library access works in a variety of environments for the classroom
  2. When and how to use several of the e-resources in POWER Library to develop lesson plans
  3. What tools are available within the highlighted resources to assist with accessibility and differentiated instruction
