Access to the E-Resources in POWER Library is

Free with your PA library card or E-Card!

February is Black History Month—a time to honor the stories, voices, and achievements that have helped shaped our nation. POWER Library offers rich, trustworthy resources that invite students, educators, and lifelong learners to explore Black history and culture through firsthand accounts, iconic publications, and influential writers.

Voices of Freedom
Dive into powerful primary sources that document pivotal moments in African American history, from the fight to end slavery to the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. This collection includes speeches, letters, court cases, and firsthand accounts that bring history to life and center the voices of those who lived it.
Suggested use: Try building a “primary source spotlight” by choosing one document and writing a short reflection on what it reveals about its time—or compare two sources from different eras to see how the struggle for freedom evolved.

Travel through more than 70 years of African American history, culture, and achievement with full issues of EBONY magazine. From civil rights and politics to entertainment, business, and everyday life, this archive offers a vivid look at how stories were told—and celebrated—across generations.
Suggested use: Browse an issue from a decade you’re studying or pick a feature article and explore how it reflects the social issues and cultural moments of its time.

Discover biographies and bibliographies of influential African American authors whose work reflects creativity, resilience, and cultural heritage. Learn how their lived experiences shaped their writing and explore themes that still resonate today.
Suggested use: Find an author whose life story sparks your interest, then pair their biography with one of their books or poems for a richer book report or discussion.
